Vanity Stool

feminine inspirations

This design was based on the concept of femininity, which has been conveyed through the form, function, and details. The function of a “vanity stool” (one meant to be used at a vanity) is implicitly feminine. The purpose of this device is to allow women to apply makeup and make themselves more feminine and desirable. The form is feminine through its softness. Everything has been rounded – the huge cushion top conveys extravagant softness. Further, the form is reminiscent of an embroidery hoop. The embroidered details communicate femininity because embroidery has traditionally been a solely female craft. The combination of the female craft, soft form, and intended use mesh to define this feminine vanity stool.

Process

hand-Embroidered details

All embroidery was done by hand, based on a hand-drawn pattern. The floral pattern was chosen because of the feminine associations with flora.

Hand-crafted oak base

The wooden base is intended to mimic the shape of an embroidery hoop. Brass tacks are reminiscent of the brass hardware common on such hoops.

Grip Light

Hand-crafted wooden and textured glass sconce light, with LED bulb. Designed and built in beginning woodworking class.

Suspension Chair

This chair concept was inspired by the idea of one piece of metal tube being bent to form the entire structure for the chair, with a simple hammock suspended to act as the seat.

Model is 3D printed.
